It seems everyone is trying to get that “edge” before they hit the gym to be stronger and workout longer. But what are the best pre workout supplements? Does Nitric Oxide Work?
One of the most popular types of supplements on the market right now are so-called “nitric oxide” supplements. The name sounds cool, kind of like some substance that’s going to supercharge your body like a sports car. Companies claim these products will give you a huge pump in the weight room (as if that’s the most important thing to lifting), and that they’ll help you build gobs more muscle than you could without them. Is there any truth to these claims?
For the most part, no. Maybe some of these supplements help you get a pump or help get you energized, maybe they don’t. The main thing to understand is that you can get a great pump for a lot cheaper than these supplements cost. Just eat more carbs! Carbs are converted to glycogen in your muscles, which can hold three times its mass in water. Eat a big bowl or rice or oatmeal a couple hours before your workout, and you’ll have super-swelled muscles without dropping big bucks on gimmicky product.
How Can You Get Energized?
So you now know how to get a pump, but what about energy? Some days you feel like ripping through the weights for hours, and some days just aren’t that great. What’s the best pre workout supplement to keep you going strong through a long workout? The truth is that almost any product that works well for giving you energy is based on plain old caffeine. Just look at the ingredients, and you’ll find it at the top of the list! If caffeine is all you’re after, you’re better off just downing a caffeine pill or a strong cup of coffee.
However, some of these pre workout energizers also contain a select blend of amino acids that is supposed to give you steady, sustained energy without the crash that caffeine often gives you. Is this really true? You’ll have to be the judge. I usually just get some caffeine in me before I train, and I’ve never felt like I needed anything else. If you find yourself with some extra cash and want to try one of these products out, go ahead. But be objective about it, and don’t fall for the placebo effect.
Do They Really Help Build Muscle?
Most of these pre workout supplements also claim to aid in muscle building. They make crazy claims like “build 50 percent more muscle,” or “gain 10 pounds 2 weeks.” If these kinds of things were possible, you’d see WAY more huge, strong guys walking around. The rules of muscle building apply here just as they always do – you’ve got to get stronger to get bigger. So if any of these products helps you add more weight to the bar or get more reps, then sure, it helps you build muscle. But then again, some starch, sugar, and caffeine before your workout can probably do the same thing. In my opinion, that’s the best pre workout supplement, and you’re probably already consuming those things, anyway.
